Darwin's 200th Birthday Celebration
Science Building Lobby
Join a mid-Victorian philosopher’s discussion salon and interact with naturalist Charles Darwin during a fun and educational happy hour. Discover what it was like to be in the audience when Charles Darwin first presented his ideas on transmutation as a portion of the Science Building lobby becomes a 19th century study where the famous naturalist himself (performer Jim Turney) will present a lecture on his groundbreaking research into barnacles, beetles and coral.
Mr. Darwin will also be available for questions and conversation after the presentation. A replica of the Beagle, the sailing ship that carried Darwin to the Galapagos Islands, will also be on display for examination along with other specimens from his journeys.
Presenting Mr. Charles Darwin… aka performer Jim Turney.
A high school studies skills coordinator by day, a famed scientist by night. Bearing a striking resemblance to the famed British thinker, Jim Turney has carefully studied Darwin’s work and mannerisms to bring this pivotal character to life. His performance is not only a tribute; it’s a labor of love.
Admission is free for members, $10 for non-members or $5 for students with ID.
