Second Saturdays are First in Fun At MNS Discovery Days, March–August
There’s always something special to discover at the Museum of Nature & Science. And during Discovery Days, you’ll find even more hands-on fun and amazing exhibits that will open your eyes to the science behind everything from prehistoric fossils to modern masterpieces.
These exciting daylong programs run from March through August on the second Saturday of each month – and they’re free with your museum admission!
Natural ability alone isn’t enough to make a great athlete. It also takes lots of practice, a little luck—and the powerful principles of science. How does the human body adapt to help high-performance athletes continually run faster or jump higher? What are some of the ways that physics is always swinging into action to make your favorite sports possible? Discover the answers to these questions and more when you join us for a day of Slam-Dunk Science.
For most of us, going camping seems like a simple way to get back to nature. But have you ever stopped to think about the science behind all the great equipment we have to help make the trip safe and fun? From hiking shoes and compasses to tents and canoes, we’ll explore the cool concepts that make your favorite gear and gadgets possible. We’ll also check out the natural wonders of our own Leonhardt Lagoon during this awesome outdoor family adventure.
With our interactive Dino Dig gallery, kids can create a fossil cast and lead their own excavation—unearthing the same kinds of clues that paleontologists use to learn about life in the age of the dinosaurs. And just when you think things couldn’t get any more amazing, our resident paleontologist will be on hand to share some behind-the-scenes insights that are sure to stop you in your tracks!
Sometimes it’s OK to go with the flow. But when it comes to understanding and conserving our most precious resource, it’s time to turn the tide. Join us for an aquatic afternoon where you’ll learn some valuable water-wise tips—along with some interesting facts about the scientific properties of water that just may surprise you.
Cars, planes, and other vehicles may have originally been invented just to get us from one place to another—but today, it’s all about speed and performance. Find out how the advanced engineering inside your favorite speed machine can make your heart race, right along with its engine! You can even pilot your own remote-controlled aircraft as you learn how science helps progress take flight.
Did you know that some of the most creative forms of art actually have their basis in math? It’s true! Here’s your chance to experiment with the different materials artists use to create their masterpieces, and to explore different instruments in a hands-on setting. Most of all, it’s a great opportunity to learn how computation and inspiration work together to produce dazzling works of art.
