Alaskan Dinosaur Expedition

July 27

Work continues in the Mancil quarry. I seem to have left the heavily rooted zone and am finding some bone that is just badly fractured rather than turned to powder. The dry screening has produced three ceratopsian teeth and two more theropod teeth. Kevin, Lizzie and Linda are attempting to jacket their large bone, which for lack of a better idea I refer to as part of a ceratopsian skull.

The mosquito count has risen, and they are back on track for being an annoyance. We’ve seen several caribou today. After averaging 1-2 a day, we’ve seen up to 11. The biggest aggregate was seven. Siksiks (large ground squirrels) are everywhere, and once again we are visited by them.

We jacketed some bones in the morning, and they were removed at the end of the day. We ran out of plaster on the ceratopsian skull jacket, although it is far from complete. I suspect, unless I can figure something out, that we will be leaving this jacket here.
